On multivariate analysis, distance to pubic symphysis and proximal medial thigh site were associated with MBOD reduction with ovary-sparing plan. Tumors < 8 cm from the pubic symphysis had significant MBOD reduction with ovary-sparing plans (376 cGy versus 619 cGy, ). Compared to standard plans, ovary-sparing plans had lower mean bilateral ovary doses (MBOD) (652 versus 483 cGy, ) but higher bone doses (mean V50: 8.5% versus 6.9%, ) and lower conformity indexes (1.12 versus 1.19, ). IMRT plans (50 Gy) with and without attempted ovary-sparing were created by an expert sarcoma dosimetrist. Standard sarcoma target volumes and organs at risk (OAR) were contoured by a sarcoma dedicated radiation oncologist on CT planning scans for 23 women with thigh or buttock sarcoma. We assessed whether ovary-sparing RT plans could decrease ovary dose without compromising target coverage. Attention to ovary dose is important for premenopausal women undergoing radiation therapy (RT) and must not be overlooked when treating extremity sarcoma. The formula for PSA density used in our PSA density calculator is obvious: In such a case, it is important to see a doctor, who will decide whether or not to perform the prostate biopsy. Generally, a PSA density of 0.15 or higher means that there is a suspicion of prostate cancer. PSA density is a parameter which helps to differentiate between prostate cancer and BPH in patients with mildly elevated PSA. The PSA value considered most frequently as the highest normal level is 4 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter). Its concentration is usually elevated in the case of prostate cancer, but it may also indicate prostatitis or BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). PSA ( Prostate Specific Antigen) is an enzyme produced by the prostate gland. The formula, representing a bullet shape, was determined to best represent the majority of prostate glands presented for brachytherapy:īullet volume (cc) = height (cm) × length (cm) × width (cm) × 5π/24.Ĭalculation results for both formulas are presented in our online prostate gland volume calculator. There are investigations showed that the majority of prostate glands are more bullet-shaped than ellipsoid. Anteroposterior diameter (height) may be measured in two planes-axial and sagittal. Transverse diameter (width) is defined as the maximal transverse diameter at mid-gland level, while longitudinal diameter (length) is defined as the distance from the proximal external sphincter to the urinary bladder. Prolate ellipse volume (cc) = height (cm) × length (cm) × width (cm) × π/6. ![]() It is calculated according to the following formula: Prolate ellipse volume calculation is fast, precise and practical for clinical application. Three commonly used prostate volume measurement techniques in transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) are planimetry calculation, prolate ellipse volume calculation, and an ellipsoid volume measurement technique. There are various methods of prostate volume measuring, but the most accurate one is ultrasound scanning using the transrectal approach. Prostate volume is known to be an important parameter since it may influence the operative approach in patients with prostatitis.
